The Seymour Duncan model 78 humbucker provides a warm crunch with sharp leads and rich overtones of tapping.
In the late 70s, Seymour Duncan was well known as someone who was looking for something out of the box. Sometime in '78, Eddie Van Halen gave him a P.A.F. for experimentation, along with instructions to rewind it with the intention of slightly improving the reproduction of artificial harmonics and “hot wind” to add additional “piquancy".

The result of this experiment was a 78-year-old Seymour Duncan humbucker. Equipped with an Alnico 2 magnet and wound according to exactly the same characteristics as the original P.A.F. rewind, the magnet and the 78th year output combination provide a warm crunch with biting leads and rich overtones of tapping. Although the '78 model was not Eddie's final destination, it gives players the opportunity to return to the beginning of his legendary quest for an unsurpassed tone.
